Problem as stated by IBM
  • “We obliterate barriers and set records with astonishing regularity. But now we face a problem springing from the very core of our success and too few of us are focused on solving it.”

Reasons and Future Trends
4
Part of a solution:
 RPI/IBM Center for Broadband Data
Transport Science and Technology

Center Mission
  • Research in optical and electrical data transport, switching, and processing to enable the massive scaling required by future generations of information technology systems
5
Gordon Moore
on the changing timetable of his law

  • “I changed the law once already. I went from doubling every year to doubling every two years in 1975. Since then, it has been pretty steady at every two years. The doubling time will slow down when we can no longer take advantage of making things smaller.”

Major Projects Planned
  • Materials and Devices
  • Layered Optical Waveguides and Vias
  • Chip to Chip Optical Communications on MCM’s
  • Development of sol-gel based waveguide materials, and active structures
  • Wide bandgap materials and devices for communications and interconnects
  • Materials, Processes, and Integration Schemes for III-V Compound Semiconductors on Si Platform
  • Automation for low cost Optical Module Packaging

(Dr. Morris Washington, Director)
  • 8500 square foot class 100
  • Upgrade Phase 1
  • o       Installation of approximately $3.7M   of 8”  processing equipment
  • o       Plan to use baseline 8” CMOS capability for spring 02 Fab Lab course.
  • Upgrade Phase 2
  • o       complete  8” upgrade and expand/create infrastructure for compound semiconductor and biochip processing

  • Might benefit from the pledged IBM resources
13
Project Operating Procedures:
How to make it work
  • Teams identified in the proposal for each project meet and discuss
    • Joint external funding proposals for the project
    • Use of pledged IBM resources for the project
    • Tasks assigned to the faculty and the IBM personnel
    • Milestones
  • Suggested project team meetings
    • once a month
    • teleconferences (bi-weekly)
14
Center Operating Procedures
